We believe that no one should have to suffer and die for people to have energy.

In 2008 the World Health Organization calculated that the coal particulates in pollution cause approximately one million deaths annually across the world.

Burning coal and other fossil fuels irreversibly changes the climate of the Earth,

which will lead only to more devastation of life.

Transitioning to renewable energy is the healthy, just, and sustainable choice.

  • Each year, the Bridgeport Harbor Station coal plant has been responsible for 1 death, 2 heart attacks and 15 asthma attacks.
  • Bridgeport’s asthma mortality rates are 3 times higher for children and 4 times higher for seniors compared to the national average.
  • Over 20% of the population within 3 miles of the plant are children under 5 and adults over 65, both of which are age groups especially vulnerable to coal’s health effects. Residents suffer the direct effects of the plant’s pollution within a 30-mile radius.
  • The power station has been in operation 44 years and its pollution controls are outdated. The coal itself is imported from Indonesia, using even more fuel for transportation and also clear-cutting forests that offset greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The coal plant has been ranked the 5th most environmentally unjust coal plant in the United States.
  • If the plant were to be retired, Connecticut would be the first state ever to shut down all of its coal plants.
